India’s Next Naval Revolution May Not Have a Crew Onboard

India’s maritime defence landscape is entering a new era—one where artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, and indigenous innovation are beginning to redefine naval operations. At the center of this shift is Parshu Tactical Defence, an emerging Indian defence startup working on AI-powered Autonomous Unmanned Surface Vessels (USVs) designed for surveillance, reconnaissance, and future maritime security missions.


While major defence companies often dominate headlines, startups like Parshu Tactical Defence are quietly building technologies that could become critical for the future of naval warfare. The company’s focus on autonomous maritime systems reflects a growing global trend where unmanned platforms are increasingly being used for border security, intelligence gathering, coastal monitoring, and even combat support missions.


Parshu Tactical Defence is developing next-generation USVs capable of operating in both fully autonomous and semi-autonomous modes. According to reports, these vessels are being designed with a mission range exceeding 500 kilometres and payload capacities of more than 300 kilograms, allowing them to perform a variety of roles ranging from persistent maritime surveillance to logistics support and force protection.


One of the most interesting aspects of the programme is the company’s emphasis on indigenous development. The startup claims nearly 70 percent indigenous content in its systems today, with plans to push that figure beyond 80 percent in the coming years.


That matters because autonomous maritime systems are becoming strategically important technologies worldwide, and reducing dependence on foreign suppliers is increasingly seen as a national security priority.


The technological ambitions behind these USVs are also significant. The vessels are reportedly being designed with Level-4 autonomy, enabling them to operate with minimal human intervention in complex maritime environments. Advanced sensor fusion systems combining radar, LIDAR, EO/IR sensors, satellite communication, and AI-enabled navigation are expected to give these platforms the ability to conduct long-duration missions even in contested environments.


In practical terms, this could allow Indian maritime forces to monitor large coastal regions continuously without deploying expensive crewed ships for every mission. Autonomous vessels can remain at sea for extended durations, respond faster to suspicious activities, and reduce operational risks to personnel.


This becomes especially important as maritime threats evolve. Smuggling networks, infiltration attempts, piracy, unmanned attack boats, and asymmetric naval tactics are becoming increasingly common across global waters. The growing use of autonomous maritime drones in conflicts around the world has demonstrated how unmanned systems are changing naval warfare.


Parshu Tactical Defence is also attracting attention because of its startup ecosystem backing. The company has been incubated under the IIT Madras Pravartak deep-tech programme and has reportedly received grant support to accelerate development.

This reflects how India’s defence innovation ecosystem is expanding beyond traditional public-sector structures and increasingly involving startups, private industry, and AI-driven technology firms.


Another notable development is the company’s reported work on NATO-approved autonomous vessel programmes in collaboration with overseas partners. If accurate, it highlights the growing export potential for Indian-origin defence technologies in the unmanned systems market.


Strategically, projects like these align closely with India’s broader push toward self-reliance in defence manufacturing under the “Make in India” initiative. Autonomous naval systems are expected to become a major component of future maritime operations globally, and India appears determined not to remain dependent on foreign platforms in this domain.


Parshu Tactical Defence may still be an emerging player, but its work signals something larger. India’s defence future will not only be shaped by fighter jets, warships, and missiles—it will also be shaped by intelligent autonomous systems operating silently across land, air, and sea.


And in that future, AI-powered USVs could become one of the Indian Navy’s most important force multipliers.
