Project Kusha: India’s indigenous long-range air defence system gaining global attention

India’s push towards building a self-reliant and technologically advanced defence ecosystem is gaining momentum—and at the center of this transformation is Project Kusha, a next-generation long-range air defence system that is now attracting global attention.

Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Project Kusha is designed to provide India with a robust, multi-layered air defence capability. In simple terms, it aims to detect, track, and neutralize a wide range of aerial threats—from fighter jets and cruise missiles to advanced drones and stealth platforms.

What makes Project Kusha particularly significant is its positioning as India’s indigenous alternative to globally recognized systems like the S-400. While India has already inducted the S-400 to strengthen its air defence shield, Project Kusha represents a long-term strategic shift—moving from dependence on foreign systems to building advanced capabilities at home.

The system is expected to feature long-range interceptors capable of engaging targets at distances reportedly beyond 150 kilometers.
