India’s push toward advanced indigenous defence technology has received another major boost.


In a significant move to strengthen the Indian Army’s electronic warfare and battlefield intelligence capabilities, the Ministry of Defence has signed a 1,476 crore contract with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) for the procurement of five Ground-Based Mobile Electronic Systems (GBMES). The deal marks another important step in India’s broader push for military modernization and self-reliance in critical defence technologies.


The systems are designed to operate in highly contested battlefield environments where information dominance can decide the outcome of a conflict. Modern warfare is no longer limited to tanks, artillery, or fighter jets. Detecting enemy radar systems, intercepting communication signals, and gaining real-time electronic intelligence have become equally important.


And that is exactly where these new systems come into play.


What Makes the GBMES Important?


The Ground-Based Mobile Electronic System is essentially a battlefield electronic warfare platform capable of detecting, identifying, classifying, and locating enemy radar emissions and communication signals. According to official information, the system can intercept and analyse various communication networks while also tracking radar activity across operational zones.


In simple terms, it helps the Army “see” and understand the electronic battlefield before the enemy can act.


This capability becomes especially critical during modern high-intensity conflicts where drones, guided missiles, and network-centric warfare dominate military operations.


The systems are mobile, allowing rapid deployment across different terrains and operational sectors. That mobility gives Indian forces greater flexibility and survivability in real combat situations.


Indigenous Technology at the Core


One of the most significant aspects of this contract is its strong indigenous content.


The deal falls under the “Buy (Indian–Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured)” category and reportedly includes a minimum of 72% indigenous content.


The system has been designed and developed by the Defence Electronics Research Laboratory (DLRL), Hyderabad, while BEL will manufacture and deliver the platforms to the Indian Army.


This reflects the growing maturity of India’s domestic defence electronics ecosystem. Over the past few years, India has increasingly focused on replacing imported military systems with locally developed alternatives, not just to reduce dependency but also to build long-term strategic capability.


BEL’s Expanding Role in India’s Defence Future


For Bharat Electronics Limited, the contract further strengthens its position as one of the key pillars of India’s defence modernization efforts.


BEL has already been involved in multiple strategic defence programs ranging from radars and missile systems to communication networks and air defence technologies. The company is also deeply linked with several future-focused projects under India’s “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” initiative.


As regional security challenges evolve, India’s investment in electronic warfare systems signals a broader shift in military priorities. The ability to dominate the electromagnetic spectrum is becoming just as important as firepower on the battlefield.

This deal is not just about acquiring new equipment—it reflects how India is preparing for the future of warfare.


From drone swarms and advanced surveillance systems to electronic attacks and cyber-enabled operations, modern battlefields are rapidly changing. Countries that can gather, process, and act on battlefield intelligence faster will hold a significant advantage.


With the induction of these advanced electronic systems, the Indian Army is moving toward a more networked, technology-driven combat environment.


And with indigenous companies like BEL leading the effort, India’s defence ecosystem is steadily transforming from an importer of critical technologies into a developer of sophisticated military systems for the future.
