Why India's Deployment of the Nebo-UM Radar Strengthens Its Air Defence Against Emerging Stealth Threats

The nature of air warfare is evolving rapidly. Stealth fighters, long-range precision weapons, and electronic warfare have become central to modern military strategy. Against this backdrop, India's reported deployment of the Russian-made Nebo-UM anti-stealth radar marks an important step in strengthening its integrated air defence network, particularly as China continues to expand its fleet of fifth-generation J-20 and the upcoming J-35 stealth fighters.
Unlike conventional surveillance radars, the Nebo-UM is specifically designed to improve the detection of low-observable aircraft. Stealth technology reduces an aircraft's radar signature, making it difficult for traditional X-band radars to detect at long distances. The Nebo-UM addresses this challenge by employing multiple radar bands, including VHF frequencies, which are generally more effective at identifying stealth aircraft. While it may not completely negate stealth technology, it significantly improves the chances of detecting and tracking such targets early enough for India's air defence network to respond.
This capability is becoming increasingly relevant in the Indo-Pacific security environment. China has steadily expanded production of the Chengdu J-20 stealth fighter while simultaneously developing the carrier-capable J-35. Together, these aircraft are expected to play a major role in the People's Liberation Army Air Force and Naval Aviation over the coming decade. Their growing numbers have prompted neighbouring countries, including India, to strengthen surveillance and early-warning capabilities rather than relying solely on interceptor aircraft.
The Nebo-UM is most effective when integrated into a layered air defence architecture. Instead of operating independently, it works alongside long-range surveillance radars, airborne early warning aircraft, surface-to-air missile systems such as the S-400, and fighter aircraft. This network-centric approach allows information from multiple sensors to be fused into a single operational picture, improving target tracking and engagement decisions even against difficult-to-detect threats.
Beyond its anti-stealth role, the radar also enhances India's ability to monitor cruise missiles, high-altitude aircraft, and other aerial platforms across vast distances. Its mobility enables deployment in strategically sensitive regions, allowing the Indian Air Force to quickly reposition radar coverage depending on operational requirements.
However, it is important to recognize that no radar can make stealth aircraft "invisible" overnight. Modern air combat remains a contest between detection technologies and stealth design, with both sides continuously evolving. The Nebo-UM should therefore be viewed as one component of India's broader modernization strategy rather than a standalone solution.
Ultimately, the deployment reflects India's growing emphasis on building a resilient, layered, and technology-driven air defence network. As advanced stealth aircraft become more common across the Indo-Pacific, investments in sophisticated surveillance systems like the Nebo-UM will play an increasingly important role in maintaining regional deterrence and safeguarding India's airspace.
